Overview
Betta splendens are freshwater labyrinth fish known for their vivid colouration, flowing fins and highly individual behaviour.
Unlike many fish, bettas can breathe atmospheric air using a specialised labyrinth organ. They still require clean, heated and properly maintained water.
A well-designed betta habitat should provide gentle flow, warm stable water, plants, cover, open surface access and comfortable resting places.
Bettas benefit from a varied carnivorous diet including quality betta pellets and suitable frozen or live foods in controlled portions.
Bettas are curious and often interact with their surroundings. Temperament varies greatly between individuals, especially around tank mates.
A betta should have a dedicated, appropriately sized aquarium rather than a cup or unheated bowl. Comfort and stability come before decoration.
